Southern California Bight Current Meters

Shelf/Transition Deployment

 

Each of the links below are for a specific current meter deployment. The data is available as text files for transfer to users. For each deployment, you may download specific meters. Data include speed, direction, u component of velocity, v component of velocity, and temperature. Some instruments include conductivity. This was converted to salinity indicated by S in the variable (Variable) column. Spd indicates speed, rather than the usual u and v; this results from bad compass data.

Profile data is presented in a matrix format. The first row contains column headers, date, time, followed by the depth and component, e.g., 19u, 19v indicates u component at 19 meters, v component at 19 meters. Subsequent rows will list scan, date and time followed by a comma delimited series of u and v components.

Units used are:

speed, u component, v component: cm sec-1
direction: degrees true north
temperature: ° C
salinity: psu

Instrumentation: The current meter type and serial number is indicated in the Instrumentation column.

Instruments were either EG&G Sea Link Vector Measuring Current Meters, VMCMs, Aanderaa Instruments RCM4 or 5 current meters, AA4 or AA5, InterOcean Systems, LLC S4 current meters, S4, or an RDInstruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler, ADCP 75 kHz, 150 kHz, or 300 kHz.
