The Coos Bay mooring

The Coos Bay mooring included the following sensors:

DATA

Data is divided into 3 parts, water property data, which consists of temperature and salinity, if available at that depth, and velocity, consisting of u and v components. All files are text, tab delimited.

All the data has been filtered to eliminate the tidal signal using the standard OSU low-pass filter with a half-power point of 46 hrs and decimated to 6 hours.

Water property data

Water property data on the Coos Bay mooring consists of temperature and salinity at 21m, temperature at 28m, temperature and salinity at 35m, temperature at 50m, temperature at 80m and temperature and salinity at 95m. They are listed in a matrix format. The first row contains column headers, date, time, followed by the variables.

Temperature columns have a header beginning with CB for the Coos Bay data, T to indicate temperature followed by the depth in meters. TV indicates the data is from a VEMCO thermister. For example, CBT35 means the data is temperature from an SBE 37 on the Coos Bay mooring at 35m. CBTV50 indicates the temperature is from a VEMCO thermister at 50m. Salinity columns have similar headers. For example, CBS95 means the data is salinity from an SBE 37 on the Coos Bay mooring at 95m.

Units are temperature: degrees C, salinity: PSU

Date and time is listed as GDATE to indicate time in GMT, format mm/dd/yy hh:mm

Water property data begins 4/22/2000 and ends 9/06/04.

Gaps are found in CBT95, CBS95 10/17/01-4/21/02

CBT21, CBS21, CBTV28, CBT35, CBS35, and CBTV50 end 7/15/04

CBTV80 ends 9/01/04

Gaps are filled with zeroes.

Velocity data

Velocity data on the Coos Bay mooring consists of velocity profile data presented in a matrix format. The first row contains column headers, date, time, followed by the depth.

The small gaps between deployments were usually filled using the t-tide tidal model prediction.  However, there was one 22 day gap (Sept. 18, 2001 to Oct. 9, 2001) in the velocity data caused when the instrument ran out of memory at the end of one of the deployments. An FFT was computed for the data prior to the gap and after the gap at each depth.  The FFT data was then used to extrapolate the series into the gap.  The two extrapolated series were averaged to create the final series within the gap.  The data was not vertically smoothed (i.e. data between adjacent bins were not used).

Units used are: u component, v component: cm/sec, true North.

Date and time is listed as GDATE to indicate time in GMT, format mm/dd/yy hh:mm.

Velocity columns have a header indicating the depth. For example CBu10 indicates the data is from the u component on the Coos Bay mooring, at 10m.

Velocity data begins 4/22/2000 and ends 9/06/04. The data at Coos Bay is in 2 meter increments. The shallowest is 10m, and the deepest is at 90m.
