The Quinault Canyon Project, April–August 1979

The Quinault Canyon 1979 project was sponsored by the United States Department of Energy Contract DE-AT06-76-EV-71025 to Dr. B. Hickey at the University of Washington.

The University of Washington deployed 9 current meter moorings in the vicinity of Quinault Canyon. Of those 9 moorings, 6 moorings were recovered with useful data: QC1, QC2, QC5, QC7, QC8, and QC10. QC3 was not deployed and QC4 and QC6 were not recovered. One instrument from QC9 was found on the beach at Brandon, OR, July 12 but it leaked and no data was recovered.

Current meters used were primarily Aanderaa (AA) meters and 2 Vector Measuring Current Meters (VMCM) instruments. Unfiltered data from the VMCM instruments is not available and therefore not included in this set. The AA data was sampled in 20 minute intervals. Data was first edited for spurious values, then speed and direction were independently filtered with a 5 point binomial filter spanning approximately 1.5 hours and resolved into u and v components.

Abbreviations and units are:
Depth, m, meters,
Speed, spd, cm/sec,
Direction, D, degrees, true north,
u component (eastward), u, v component (northward), v, cm/sec, true North,
Temperature, T, ºC,
Date and time is listed as DATE. Add 8 hours to convert to GMT. Format mm/dd/yy hh:mm.

Data files consist of ASCII tab delimited files, one per meter. Headers indicate the mooring and year, the variable, and depth rounded to the nearest meter. For example QC791u210 indicates the data is from the 1979 QC1 mooring, u component at 210m, QC7910T15 indicates the data is from the 1979 QC10 mooring, temperature at 15m. The last column, JJ, is zero filled to indicate last data column for that meter.
