The Continental Shelf Experiment 1973–1974

The Continental Shelf Experiment was originally sponsored by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission under contract designator AT 45-1-2225-TA-25 to Dr. J. Dugan Smith, Principal Investigator, at the University of Washington.

Beginning in 1972 the scope of the Continental Shelf Experiment was increased. Moorings were kept out for longer time periods during the winter and summer and an attempt was made to maintain moorings at both an Inshore and an Offshore site. The purpose of the 1973–1974 project was to study the winter and spring currents on the Washington continental shelf. In 1973 the University of Washington maintained 2 current meter moorings, Inshore, (IN), and Offshore (OF) during January and February 1973. A new mooring site was selected off Westport, WA (WP) in February 1973 to provide a cross shelf comparison. It was only occupied from February through March 1973. The IN mooring was also deployed March–June 1973 and again November 1973–February 1974. The OF mooring was deployed in March 1973 but was lost and subsequently not redeployed.

Aanderaa model RCM-4 current meters were used on all the moorings except the WP mooring which had Braincon type 381meters. The Aanderaa and Braincon current meters measured speed and direction, which were then resolved into u and v components. The Aanderaa meters had temperature sensors. Aanderaa meters sampled at 10 minute intervals, Braincons sampled at 20 minute intervals. Data have been lightly edited but spurious points may still exist particularly in temperature data. Data files consist of ASCII tab delimited files, one per meter. Headers indicate the time base (Date indicates PST), mooring, the deployment, variable, and depth rounded to the nearest meter. For example, IN173u15 indicates the data is from the IN mooring, first deployment in 1973, u component at 15m, OF273v153 indicates the data is from the Offshore mooring, second deployment in 1973, v component at 153m. The last column, JJ, is zero filled to indicate the last data column for that meter.
